Google Ads (formerly known as Google AdWords) is an online advertising platform where advertisers can bid on keywords to have their ads appear on Google search results (this is also known as PPC or pay-per-click advertising). In addition, Google also offers image & video ads that can appear on websites across the internet as well as YouTube advertising and product listings. Google rebranded AdWords as Google Ads in 2018 but they are effectively the same thing.
Google Ads Smart campaigns – formerly known as AdWords Express – are automated campaigns designed to help small and local businesses get up and running on Google Ads as quickly as possible. While the option of automating your ad campaigns may sound tempting, we don’t normally recommend using Smart campaigns due to the limited control you’ll have over your ads. Note that Google has made Smart campaigns the default option for all new advertisers, so you may already be using this campaign type without knowing. One of the key advantages of Google Ads is the ability to track conversions. In fact, one of the first things you should do before setting your campaigns live is to make sure you have conversion tracking installed on your website. Conversions are typically actions that are important for your business – common goals include: purchases, e-book downloads, subscriptions, phone calls or contact form submissions. Once you have your conversion tracking set up, Google Ads will record how many conversions each campaign and keyword drove and help you calculate the cost per acquisition (CPA) and how much revenue was generated from your ads.
If you want to use Google Ads to promote your business online, then you’ll need a website for your business. If you don’t have a website, it may be possible to use a Facebook Business page instead, but there are several reasons why you shouldn’t, including poor landing page experience and the inability to track conversions. In any case, a dedicated and well optimised landing page will improve your conversion rate and maximise the profitability of your Google Ads campaigns.
Google PPC advertising is best suited for businesses that are already generating organic sales online. If you’re not generating sales consistently, we would recommend using organic/free methods to test your product and offer with your target audience before moving to PPC advertising.
